In Balinese culture, the main religion is Hinduism, but it is different from the Hindu religion in India. In Bali, the Hindu religion is more like “animism”. Animism is the belief that everything in nature, like animals, plants, and even rocks, has its own spirit or soul.

I appreciate Church architecture, especially the design of Old Catholic Churches. Whenever I go on a trip, I always make sure to visit a Church. I believe that exploring a church provides insight into the culture of a place. This time, I visited Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus or commonly known as Palasari Catholic Church.

A Brief History
This church was built in 1956 and designed by Brother Ign. Amd Vrieze, SVD who is from Netherlands. The consecration of this church was on December 13, 1958. Its current appearance is the result of the renovations done to the church in 1992.

The Architectural Design
What makes Palasari Catholic Church stands out amongst other structure in Bali is its unique appearance. It combines the Christianity and Balinese Hindu style. It adapted Bali island’s unique art and the European distinctive design.

The Tradition
During Christmas season, the church is decorated with penjor and janur (young coconut leaves) Christians or Catholics who attends mass during Christmas usually wear traditional Balinese clothing.

The Location
Palasari Catholic Church or Parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is in Palasari Hamlet, Ekasari Village, Melaya District, Jembrana Regency. The Church is 3 hours’ drive from Denpasar or 2.5 hours if you came from Ubud.

Interesting Facts
Beside the church is a beautiful garden where you can find a Grotto of Mother Mary and Crucifix of Jesus Christ. There is also a votive candle station inside the garden. Although 80% of Bali Island’s population is Hindu, this place in Jembrana – the village where the Palasari Catholic Church is located – most of the people here are Catholics.
